INREF Smart-in-Ag Summer School 2022
INREF Smart-in-Ag Summer School 2022
Smart farming towards sustainable protein production: An interdisciplinary approach to improved protein production
18-22 July 2022, Bogor (Indonesia)
Introduction
The competition for land is fierce in Indonesia given the rising population and booming economic conditions. This makes simply expanding agricultural production impossible and raises questions about how smart farming technologies improve the economic efficiency, animal welfare and the environmental impact of agricultural production. Using an interdisciplinary approach, this summer school aims to study smart farming technologies from several scientific angles, such as (i) systems thinking, including the adoption of technology from a social system perspective, (ii) the economics of smart farming, (iii) ICT, data management and infrastructure, and (iv) the environmental aspects of smart farming. This 5-day summer school is organised by IPB University and Wageningen University & Research as part of SMART in Ag project (Please see below). It adopts a hybrid teaching format, indicating that some activities will be presented in real life while other activities will be pre-recorded or broadcasted online.
Target group and learning outcomes
The course is oriented towards PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and others with background in smart farming in agriculture and who are interested in interdisciplinary research. After successful completion of this course, students are able to:
- Understand the importance of interdisciplinarity in making impact with smart farming
- Apply the basics of methodologies used in various disciplines
- Integrate and evaluate these methodologies into a holistic and transdisciplinary approach

Project Information
Smart-In-Ag (short for Smart Indonesian Agriculture) is a joint research program between Wageningen University and Research and IPB University in Indonesia, together with State Agriculture Polytechnic in Kupang, and several industrial partners: Single Spark, e-Fishery, WorldFish, and Dairy Pro Indonesia. It is funded by INREF and LPDP. Additionally, project partners add to the funding by in-kind contributions. The project is structured as follows: three topic lines (decision support, dairy data collection, and fish data collection) are combined with five disciplines (economic efficiency, environmental sustainability, system infrastructure, uptake & social system, data & algorithms). Nine PhD students are executing the work and are supervised by researchers from Wageningen University and IPB University. For more information on regarding the project and the description of the PhD projects, please visit the Smart-In-Ag website at: https://smart-in-ag.com.
