SB IPB Students Deepen Adult CPR Skills through Integrated Emergency Case Simulations

Bogor, The Basic Life Saving (BLS) training series for undergraduate students of the School of Business, IPB University continued with a session on “Adult CPR and Integrated Case Simulation,” held online via Zoom Meeting on Friday, May 29, 2026, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. WIB. The activity was attended by 23 students and featured dr. Widya Eka Nugraha, M.Si.Med. as the speaker.

Unlike the previous session, which focused on the introduction of emergency conditions and first aid, this training placed greater emphasis on managing cardiac arrest in adults through the proper and structured application of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). The material was designed to provide students with an understanding of the role of laypersons in increasing a victim’s chance of survival before receiving further medical treatment.

In his presentation, the speaker explained that assistance provided by the first person present at the scene, known as a bystander, plays a crucial role in the chain of survival for victims of cardiac arrest. A rapid response, including recognizing the victim’s condition, activating emergency assistance, and performing high-quality CPR, can significantly increase the victim’s chance of survival.

Participants gained an understanding of the stages of basic life support for adult victims, starting from assessing scene safety, checking the victim’s response, identifying abnormal breathing patterns, and performing effective chest compressions. In addition to technical aspects, students were also encouraged to understand the importance of coordination and quick decision-making in critical situations.

The session also discussed the concept of the Chain of Survival as a systematic approach to managing cardiac arrest. This includes early recognition of emergency conditions, activation of emergency services, CPR administration, use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and advanced care by healthcare professionals. Participants were introduced to the function of AEDs and the importance of their availability in public spaces to support successful first aid for victims of cardiac arrest.

One of the main focuses of this training was the quality of CPR delivered to victims. The speaker emphasized that the effectiveness of chest compressions, continuity of action, and the ability to recognize changes in the victim’s condition are determining factors in the resuscitation process. Students were also provided with an understanding of rescue breathing and various considerations that need to be taken into account when performing it.

To strengthen conceptual understanding, the activity continued with an integrated case simulation that brought together all stages of emergency management learned in previous sessions. Through case-based discussions, participants were asked to analyze given situations, identify action priorities, and determine the most appropriate response based on the principles of basic life support.

This approach aimed not only to improve students’ technical understanding but also to develop their critical thinking, communication, and decision-making skills in situations that require a rapid response. The active discussion reflected participants’ enthusiasm in understanding the application of CPR concepts in various emergency scenarios that may be encountered in everyday life.

Through this activity, the School of Business, IPB University continues to strengthen students’ competencies in safety and emergency preparedness. Students are expected not only to understand the principles of basic life support theoretically, but also to apply a systematic and responsive mindset when facing emergency situations within the campus environment and the wider community.
